The Battle For Manhattan put on the Battle of the Interns Dodgeball Challenge, which took place in the Baruch College gym on July 28th. Teams of law firm, media, and consulting interns participated in the well-organized event.
Everyone was impressed by Manhattan United’s tremendous chemistry and skills. Manhattan United is a group of people who seemed to be extremely well traversed in the world of dodgeball. One dude who was identical to the Big Boss Man from old school WWF had an absolute cannon. Despite his comical 80’s sleeveless button down and no joke goatee, whenever he had a ball in his hands everyone seemed to migrate to the rear of the gym to avoid his fastballs.
After their championship performance, we caught up with Eric Braxton, the team’s captain, to learn a little more about their team and how they have come to be so dominant. It turns out that the team is made up of long time dodgeball players who met through the sport. They consistently play at the NYCSSC, and many are a part of the weekly action at McCarren Pool Parties on Sundays during the summer. It’s no wonder they are so good, (they play a lot) but that doesn’t take away from their impressive performance. Manhattan United went on to take the gold and walked away with the coveted bar tab at Arctica, the host of the after party.
Not to be outdone by Manhattan United’s win, the real gold medal of the day goes to Yutu, an eight year old Japanese boy who performed during the intermission. He brought the roof down with his nasty guitar licks and gave off enough energy to carry all teams through the second half.
The closing event and celebration for the Battle For Manhattan was held on Thursday, April 24th at Rebel. The West side was warded the trophy that was presented by John Starks, Escalade and Kevin Young.
